Situation

In Catalonia, the memory of Republican exile has been preserved, especially in two large areas. One is Alt Empordà, which was the central scenario of the final stage of the Republican Government of Catalonia and of the retreat of hundreds of thousands of people, including the leaders of the Government of Catalonia, the Spanish Republic and the Basque autonomous government. The other, the Catalonia of the North, which was the first refuge for the great mass of those defeated and that, for many, was also the first experience of the extreme harshness of the new life that awaited them. In both areas, we find many elements evoking those events; even the landscape itself is evocative. So it is not surprising that the place chosen to locate the future museum is the town of La Jonquera.

Its privileged location, halfway between the plains of L'Empordà and Roussillon, and in the midst of the great Catalan coastal corridor, has made this town not only a privileged witness of the Republican exodus (as it was the main point of escape for those exiled), but also for many other exiles throughout history and a large number of mass migrations from south to north and vice versa. This circumstance and the explicit aim of taking responsibility for preserving the memory of all these exiles and migrations shows the appropriateness of its choice as the museum location.

We must add to this that the town has a privileged space to accommodate the museum, in carrer Major (formerly the continuation of National-II to the border), which had been a theatre and of which only "the stage area" of the building has been preserved, and linked the centre of the town with the bank of the river that flows through it.
