In the neighbourhood where he had lived since his youth, the French painter and visual artist Daniel Despothuis (Pamiers, Ariège, France, 1949) was surrounded by families of Spanish refugees who experienced La Retirada (Spanish Refugees Retreat, 1939).

In adulthood, with his ex-wife, his companions, his friends and his current partner, his immersion in remembrance of this period continued.

Daniel Despothuis shares with us the feelings, emotions and vision that these events have given him by means of an installation, a painting and a video.

We Are Not Dead compels us to not forget those who have lived the Republican Exile. These powerful artistic pieces will touch those for whom the pain is still very real and be a source of discovery and reflection for those unfamiliar with this tragic episode in our history.
