Conference-Symposium "Reflecting Exile: The Approach to the Experience of the Republican Exile Through History, Art and Testimonies"

This Conference-Symposium "Reflecting Exile: The Approach to the Experience of the Republican Exile Through History, Art and Testimonies" is part of a multidisciplinary approach and proposes a dialogue between the construction of scientific history, artistic expression derived from the suffering of exile and the memory(ies) associated with the testimonials of those involved. 

After nearly a year of commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of the Civil War and the beginning of Republican exile, the Exile Memorial Museum proposes a lecture that, apart from being a tribute to the actors and the dissemination of knowledge of this historical episode, seeks to provide food for thought about what the phenomenon of exile means and, more specifically, on how it fits into the great Republican exodus in the history of the twentieth century.

On 20, 21 and 22 November, 2009 a symposium was held on "Reflecting Exile: The Approach to the Experience of the Republican Exile Through History, Art and Testimonies". Eighteen speakers participated in the symposium, all recognised experts on issues related to Republican exile and the treatment of exile as a global phenomenon characteristic of the twentieth century and our time.

From a multidisciplinary approach, we propose a dialogue between the construction of a rigorous scientific history and the study of artistic expression derived from the suffering of exile, and the processing of memory or the memories associated with the testimony of those involved. Ultimately, this emphasis on reflection means that the conference will bring together different points of view from spheres of knowledge such as history, art history, philosophy, political science, literary criticism and cultural studies.
