The Suitcase of Insomnia is an artistic installation that proposes, from a chair and a suitcase with different materials and photographs, a reflection and a journey through more than 30 years of photographic work in relation to war conflicts and its human consequences.

Generally, and perhaps with excessive normalcy, we talk about refugees, but all too often we forget to ask ourselves questions about the why of this scourge. More unacceptable in these times when thousands and thousands of people roam the world defying inhumane borders.

Wars, poverty and environmental disasters end up generating huge numbers of displaced people, exiles, immigrants who, unwittingly and unintentionally, find themselves forced to leave their country and home.

With "The Suitcase of Insomnia" I can not and do not intend to be exhaustive with the phenomenon of refugees. I would just like to raise awareness of what I have been unlucky enough to know in depth: the victims of the Bosnian war and those affected by the devastation of the Tsunami in Sri Lanka.

The workshop "La maleta dels insomnis" by photographer Miquel Ruiz will take place on May 18 at 11 am. With the participation of a group of students from IES La Jonquera.

From an artistic and photographic installation called "The suitcase of insomnia", the photographer Miquel Ruiz explains his experience as a photographer, his activity to help refugees since the 90s of the twentieth century and the use of photography as a solidarity tool. The suitcase contains various materials that invite reflection through the photographs and texts selected by Miquel Ruiz. From the photographs, taken in Sarajevo, Croatia, Bosnia and Sri Lanka between 1993 and 2009, students at IES La Jonquera will be able to get to know first hand the artistic experience and civic activism of Miquel Ruiz.
